To show possession, we use the possessive particle 的 after pronouns, nouns and proper nouns. This particle is used to state who the object belongs to.
Pay attention
There are three ‘de’ particles in Mandarin Chinese., which sound the same.. In order to not confuse them, the Chinese use the particle 的 based on its constituent parts: 白勺的 .
Scheme
possessor
的
what/who
Examples
我的书
my book
wǒ de shū
妈妈的手机
mum’s phone
māma de shǒujī
When we need to use several possessions in a row, we place only one 的 at the end.
Examples
我(的)妈妈的书
my mum’s book
wǒ māma de shū
她(的)朋友的哥哥
her friend’s elder brother
tā péngyou de gēge
When we talk about family, home, friends, work, or studies, 的 can be omitted.
