The “not only...but also...” structures have several variations. 不但…而且… is the most widely used one.
If there is only one subject in a sentence, it’s placed at the beginning:
Scheme
subject
不但
А
而且
В
We can use adjectives, verbs, or verb phrases instead of "А" and "В".
Examples
你不但帮助了我,而且帮助了她
Not only did you help me, but you also helped her
nǐ búdàn bāngzhù le wǒ, érqiě bāngzhù le tā
她不但漂亮,而且聪明
She is not only beautiful, but also smart
tā búdàn piàoliang, érqiě cōngmíng
If there are two subjects in a sentence, they are placed after the parts of the structure.
In the second part of the sentence, we can use the adverbs 也 и 还 before the verb.
Scheme
不但
subject 1
А
而且

Examples
我们班不但我会说德语,而且老师也会说
Not only I can speak German in our class, but our teacher can too
Not only did you not thank him, but you also blamed him?
nǐ búdàn bú xiè tā, hái mányuàn tā
The structure 不但不/没…反而…
In the examples above, the second part of the sentence complements the first one. If we use 反而 in the second part, the two halves of the sentence will oppose each other.
The meaning of the structure is “not only…, but on the contrary…”.
Pay attention
In this structure, we use a verb in the negative form with the negative particle 不 or 没 /没有 after 不但.
Examples
她不但不生气反而笑了
Instead of getting angry, she laughed
tā búdàn bù shēngqì fǎn'ér xiào le
风不但没停,反而越刮越大了
The wind not only didn’t stop. On the contrary, it was getting stronger
fēng búdàn méi tíng, fǎn'ér yuè guā yuè dà le
The structures 不仅 and 不只
不但 can be replaced with 不仅 or 不只 “not only”. We can also use 而且, 还 or 也 in the second part.
The following combinations are the most common:
