The modal adverb 恐怕
The modal adverb (语气副词) expresses subjective judgment or assurance toward an action.
The adverb has two meanings: 1) "probably, perhaps". It may indicate a guess, or express a prediction about a situation that might happen.
Examples
他回国了恐怕有一年了
He's probably been back in the country for a year
tā huíguó le kǒngpà yǒu yì nián le
恐怕需要我们的支持
He probably needs our support
tā kǒngpà xūyào wǒmen de zhīchí
我嗓子疼,恐怕是感冒
I have a sore throat. I probably have a cold
wǒ sǎngzi téng, kǒngpà shì gǎnmào
2) "I'm afraid that...". It also may express concern. It is often used when we are trying to politely refuse something. For example: “I'm afraid I can't make it today”.
