The modal adverb 只好
The modal adverb (语气副词) expresses subjective judgment or assurance toward an action.
is used to indicate that there is no other choice. In a sentence, it is placed before a predicate.
Pay attention
Usually a problem is described in the first part of the sentence and a solution is described in the second part of the sentence after 只好.
Examples
我觉得不舒服,只好跟老师请假
I didn't feel well and had to ask the teacher permission to go to the nurse
wǒ juéde bù shūfu, zhǐhǎo gēn lǎoshī qǐngjià
我们只好等他过来
We had to wait for him to come over
wǒmen zhǐhǎo děng tā guòlái
没有座位了,我们只好站着
There are no seats left, so we’ll have to stand
méi yǒu zuòwèi le, wǒmen zhǐhǎo zhàn zhe
