The adverb and the pronoun 如此
如此 can serve both as an adverb and as a pronoun.
The adverb 如此
We use the adverb before an adjective. The adverb is used to strengthen the adjective.
Pay attention
Adverbs of degree (程度副词) are used to intensify or modify the degree of an adjective or verb: very, really, extremely.
We mostly use 如此 in written speech.
Examples
公司无法承担如此巨大的亏损
The company cannot afford such a huge loss
gōngsī wúfǎ chéngdān rúcǐ jùdà de kuīsǔn
我从未感到如此羞辱
I have never felt so humiliated
wǒ cóng wèi gǎndào rúcǐ xiūrù
认识你之前我从没有如此快乐过
I had never been so happy before I met you
rènshi nǐ zhīqián wǒ cóng méiyǒu rúcǐ kuàilèguò
The pronoun 如此
Sometimes 如此 can be a demonstrative pronoun with meaning “in this way”, “this”. We can use it either on its own or before a verb.
Examples
我想是如此
I think so
wǒ xiǎng shì rúcǐ
最终,他就是如此做的
In the end, that's what he did
zuìzhōng, tā jiùshì rúcǐ zuò de
许多父母都对孩子们如此说过
Many parents have said this to their children
xǔduō fùmǔ dōu duì háizimen rúcǐ shuōguò
