Expressing “no need” with the verb 用不着

We use the verb 用不着

to emphasize that a person does not need something. It should be followed by a noun or other verb.

Examples

我事实上用不着工作

I don't actually need to work

wǒ shìshí shàng yòngbùzháo gōngzuò

暂时还用不着，谢谢您的好意

I don’t have a need for that now, but thank you for the kind gesture

zànshí hái yòngbùzháo, xièxie nín de hǎoyì

我觉得，我还用不着别人的建议

I think that I don’t need advice from others yet

wǒ juéde, wǒ hái yòngbùzháo biéren de jiànyì

Sometimes 用不着 can also be the adjective “unnecessary”. In this case we should state the particle 的

after it.

把用不着的书放回书架

Put the unused books back on the shelf

bǎ yòngbùzháo de shū fànghuí shūjià

家里有用不着的杂物吗？

Do you have unused junk in the house?

jiāli yǒu yòngbùzháo de záwù ma
