We use the adverb 向来 when we talk about someone’s behaviour. We should state it before a predicate, which can be expressed by a verb or an adjective.
The adverb 向来 describes the situation that began in the past and lasts until now.
Examples
他这个人向来吃软不吃硬,你不能硬来
He always responds to persuasion but not to force. You shouldn't be too forceful with him
tā zhè ge rén xiànglái chī ruǎn bù chī yìng, nǐ bù néng yìng lái
他向来第一个到学校,从未迟到过
He was always the first to arrive at school and was never late
tā xiànglái dìyī ge dào xuéxiào, cóng wèi chídàoguò
When 向来 is stated before the negation it is translated as “never”.
