How to express “to lose” with 失去, 丧失, and 损失
All these verbs have a similar meaning of “to lose”, however we should use them in different contexts.
The verb 失去
We can use the verb either with concrete or with abstract objects. The verb has a neutral connotation and emphasizes that a person no longer possesses what he had before.
Examples
车祸让他失去了一条腿
to make up for lost time
chēhuò ràng tā shīqù le yì tiáo tuǐ
补偿失去的时间
The car accident cost him a leg
bǔcháng shīqù de shíjiān
飞机失去控制被迫降落在湖面上
The plane lost control and was forced to land on a lake
fēijī shīqù kòngzhì bèi pòjiàng luò zài húmiàn shàng
The verb 丧失
We can use the verb only with abstract objects. For example, feelings or dreams. We usually use this verb when talking about loss that causes sadness or grief.
Examples
丧失劳动能力的残废人
permanently incapacitated
sàngshī láodòng nénglì de cánfèirén
即使在困难时期,她也从未丧失信仰
Even in difficult times, she never lost her faith
jíshǐ zài kùnnan shíqī, tā yě cóngwèi sàngshī xìnyǎng
这件意外事故使他丧失了生命
This accident cost him his life
zhè jiàn yìwài shìgù shǐ tā sàngshī le shēngmìng
The verb 损失
The verb emphasizes that the lost item incurred a considerable expense to the owner.
Examples
为了赢得什么,你愿意损失什么?
What you are willing to lose in order to win?
wèile yíngdé shénme, nǐ yuànyì sǔnshī shénme
去年因罢工损失了数以千计的工作日
Thousands of aggregated work days were lost last year due to the strike
qùnián yīn bàgōng sǔnshī le shù yǐ qiān jì de gōngzuòrì
We also use 损失 when referring not only to total loss, but also to partial loss.

农场被淹,收成损失了一大半
The farm was flooded and a large part of the harvest was lost
nóngchǎng bèi yān, shōuchéng sǔnshī le yí dàbàn
不到三分钟,我的棋子损失大半
In less than three minutes, I lost half of my pieces
bú dào sān fēnzhōng, wǒ de qízǐ sǔnshī dàbàn
损失 as a noun
Sometimes we can use 损失 as a noun for “damage”, “loss”.
Examples
公司会赔偿我们的损失
The company will compensate us for our losses
gōngsī huì péicháng wǒmen de sǔnshī
火灾造成了巨大的损失
The fire caused a lot of damage
huǒzāi zàochéng le jùdà de sǔnshī
