The structure
"On the one hand..., on the other hand…"
The parenthetical structure is used the same as in English. We use this structure when we talk about various aspects (mostly opposed to each other) of a situation. For example: “On the one hand, renting a whole apartment is more expensive than just a room. On the other hand, you don't have to share a kitchen and a bathroom with someone else”.
Scheme
一方面
A
B
We often use the conjunction “but” before 另一方面. For example:
Examples
On the one hand, they want children; but on the other hand, they don't want to give up their freedom
tāmen yì fāngmiàn xiǎngyào háizi, dàn lìng yì fāngmiàn bù xiǎng fàngqì zìyóu
On the one hand I feel sorry for him, but on the other hand, I think it's his own fault
yì fāngmiàn wǒ juéde tā kělián, lìng yì fāngmiàn juéde shì tā zìjǐ de cuò
We also can make such sentences more complicated. For example: and and and
Examples
On the one hand, the film was was unprofitable; but on the other hand, the reviews were very good
yì fāngmiàn zhè bù diànyǐng péi le qián, dàn cóng lìng yì fāngmiàn lái kàn, pínglùn dàtǐ shàng shì hěn hǎo de
On the one hand, this project is too expensive and on the other hand, it is too difficult to implement
cóng yì fāngmiàn lái shuō zhè ge xiàngmù huāfèi tài dà, lìng yì fāngmiàn yě tài nán shíshī
We also can use only one part of the structure:
Examples
On the other hand, there are no mosquitoes here at all
zài lìng yì fāngmiàn, zhèlǐ wánquán méi yǒu wénzi
