另 and 另外
We can use 另外 either as an adverb, conjunction or as an adjective. There is also its shorten form — 另.
Conjunction
In sentences with homogeneous predicate clauses, we use 另外 
as the conjunction. We should state it before the last predicate.

We also can state 另外 before simple verbs, where it has the meaning “to do something additionally”.

Sometimes we can shorten 另外 to 另.
另外 is more often combined with polysyllabic verbs while 另 is more often combined with monosyllabic verbs.

Adjective
We can use 另外 as an adjective with the meaning “the other”.
We should place either the particle 的 or a numeral with a measure word between 另外 and a noun.

We can shorten the adjective 另外 to 另.
Remember that between 另 and a noun we must use a numeral.
The most common combination is 另一.
