The verbs 变得, 变成, and 成为 have the same meaning “to become”, but differ slightly in usage.
The verb 成为
The verb indicates a positive and gradual change. In a sentence, 成为 is placed before either a noun or a noun phrase.

He became a writer after several years of teaching
tā jiāo le jǐ nián shū zhīhòu chéngwéi zuòjiā
保健已经成为大生意

The verb indicates a negative and sudden change. In a sentence, 变成 is placed before either a verb or a verb phrase.
Pay attention
The verb 变成 is usually used in the past tense. Therefore, 变成 must be followed by the particle .
